Meta announced that CrowdTangle will be discontinued on August 14, 2024, as the company shifts its focus to developing new research tools.

Until then, users can still access CrowdTangle, its Chrome extension, and real-time data updates. However, no new users can be added to accounts during this period as the platform will be in maintenance mode.

Exploring Alternative Platforms

Marketers relying on CrowdTangle for trend analysis, publication monitoring, and analytics will need to seek alternative tools as the platform is discontinued.

Anticipated Changes

  • Starting August 14, 2024, access to CrowdTangle’s user interface, API, Chrome extension, and historical data feature will be discontinued. The API rate limits for CrowdTangle will remain unchanged until the tool is completely shut down.
  • Regarding alternatives, advertisers can still utilize Insights within Meta Business Suite (MBS) after CrowdTangle is discontinued. Additionally, they have the option to collaborate with third-party providers that offer social listening capabilities based on Meta’s API.

Why is this happening now?

In 2021, CrowdTangle found itself at the center of controversy due to its role in disseminating politically divisive content on Meta platforms. After a bot account on X, created by The New York Times journalist, regularly highlighted the most popular Facebook posts using CrowdTangle data, doubts arose about Facebook algorithms endorsing such content.

As a result of content discrepancies, Facebook disbanded the CrowdTangle team, but the platform continued to operate, providing users with data analysis information. Now, after prolonged controversies and rumors, Meta confirms plans to discontinue CrowdTangle, justifying it as a need for new research tools.

What does the Meta say?

Meta mentioned that their data-sharing tools are adapting to changes in technology and regulations. They believe that discontinuing CrowdTangle will enable them to allocate resources to their new research tools, the Meta Content Library, and Content Library API, which offer valuable and high-quality data for research purposes. The Meta Content Library was created to address new regulatory demands regarding data sharing and transparency, while upholding Meta’s strict privacy and security protocols.
