How to verify your business with a service area on Google

Verifying a business on Google can be challenging, especially if video verification is required. It’s not always clear what evidence Google expects to see, and this often leads to rejection. However, with the right preparation, the verification process can be much simpler and more successful. In this article, we’ll explore how to pass verification, what to do if your request is denied, and how to keep your profile compliant with Google’s policies. What is a Service Area Business in Google? Before starting the verification process, make sure your business matches the Service Area Business (SAB) format. A service area business provides goods or services directly at the customer’s location rather than at a storefront. Unlike a hybrid business, a pure SAB does not serve customers at a physical address. On Google Maps, such a company does not display a public address. Instead, a shaded service area appears on the map. This distinction is crucial for passing verification in Google Business Profile. How to Pass Verification Correctly Since a SAB does not have a storefront, there’s no need to confirm an address. Google needs to verify three things: The business is registered and has proper documentation. Services are indeed provided within the stated area. The person completing verification is an official representative of the company. Preparing for Verification 1. Business websiteYour site should include: company name, phone number, service area, working hours, description of services. Add this information at least a week before starting the verification process. 2. Consistency of informationBusiness details must be consistent across all platforms. For new businesses, it’s worth creating profiles on BBB, Yelp, or the local chamber of commerce. 3. Proof of activityUpload photos to your profile or website, such as: branded vehicles and staff uniforms, vehicles near local landmarks, tools and equipment on job sites, promotional materials or business cards. 4. DocumentsPrepare: license or certificate of registration, DBA/fictitious business name, insurance policies, utility bills. 5. Corporate email addressUse an email tied to your website domain for verification. This increases Google’s trust. Video Verification If video verification is required: Prepare your vehicle, tools, and documents. Record the video so that it shows: the branded vehicle and business name, tools and equipment, documents (registration, licenses, utility bills). Show that you have control over the vehicle: unlock it, start the engine, demonstrate the equipment. Important: Do not use P.O. boxes, virtual addresses, or coworking spaces. These are prohibited, even if the address is not displayed on the map. If Verification Is Denied Even with thorough preparation, Google may reject verification. In such cases, you’ll receive an email explaining which requirements weren’t met. The reason will also appear next to the “Get verified” button in your profile. Usually, Google requires additional proof that the person undergoing verification is indeed connected to the business. Use this feedback to determine next steps: repeat the video verification with the suggested improvements, prepare additional documents or materials confirming business activity, contact GBP support if necessary. Contacting Google Support If verification fails again, contact support through the button during video verification or inside the verification tool. This ensures you reach the team responsible for verification issues. Using the general support form may result in an automated response without a concrete resolution. Keeping Your Google Business Profile Compliant After successful verification, it’s important to keep all information accurate and up to date. This helps avoid re-verification or profile suspension. Service area settings Specify particular cities, ZIP codes, or regions. Avoid selecting entire states, provinces, or countries. Google recommends limiting your service area to within a two-hour driving distance. The service area in your profile should match the information on your website (e.g., a “We serve these areas” section). For multiple profiles under one brand, do not duplicate service areas. This may result in suspension. Major profile changesEditing key details may trigger re-verification. Before making changes, ensure your website and other sources are already updated. Do not make several major changes at once. Leave a 24–48-hour gap between them. Major changes include: business name, address, phone number, website, business category. ReviewsFresh and regular reviews are among the strongest signals to Google that your business is active and legitimate. They improve profile visibility and strengthen trust from both the platform and customers.
