This month, Google announced it would update its advertising policy related to cryptocurrencies and blockchain-based games. The update aims to clarify the rules for promoting non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and related products on Google Ads, as reported by UAMASTER digital agency.

What is changing?

From September 15, marketers will be allowed to advertise NFT games that do not promote gambling. Additionally, these advertisements must meet specific requirements and be certified by Google.

Acceptable NFT gaming ads include those that promote in-game purchases such as virtual clothing, weapons, or armor that enhance the user’s gaming experience.

However, Google will maintain its prohibition on gaming ads where players can bet or risk NFTs to win cryptocurrency or other NFT rewards.

Casino games that simulate and offer rewards in the form of NFTs remain prohibited, and ads directing users to gambling sites with NFT integration are not allowed.

What does this mean for marketers?

For marketers planning to advertise NFT content related to gambling, it is crucial to strictly adhere to Google’s policies regarding gambling and obtain the necessary certification. These updated advertising rules will be mandatory for all accounts in each country.

Google has stated that violations of these rules will not lead to an immediate account suspension. Instead, marketers will receive warnings, at least seven days in advance, before potential ad suspensions take effect. This means that marketers must ensure their NFT-related ads comply with Google’s policies to avoid disruptions in their advertising campaigns.

What will be the consequences if you don’t comply with the rules?

Google expects all advertisers to comply with local laws in any region where their advertising is targeted. This policy will be mandatory for all accounts advertising such products and will be applied globally.

Summary

This step is taken amidst the growing popularity of NFTs and blockchain games. However, there has been discontent regarding regulating gambling in this new space. The recent changes in Google’s policy are aimed at striking a balance between innovation and responsible advertising.
