Some TikTok users have encountered ads they cannot immediately swipe past. One case was reported on Reddit, while UAMASTER observed the same behavior in Belgium. TikTok has not announced a new ad format, so the evidence points to a limited test rather than a confirmed rollout.
On October 16, 2026, a Reddit user reported that TikTok would not let them scroll past an ad for several seconds. When they attempted to swipe, the screen displayed the message “Swipe after the ad.”
UAMASTER observed similar behavior in Belgium: while an ad was playing, TikTok temporarily prevented the user from moving to the next video. This suggests the Reddit report may not be an isolated incident, but it does not yet establish the scale or geographic scope of the test.
Ads in the For You feed can normally be skipped in the same way as organic videos, with a quick upward swipe. That freedom to move on instantly is central to how people use short-form video feeds. The apparent test temporarily removes that control.
For now, these are user observations, not the confirmed launch of a new advertising product.
At least two instances of an ad that could not immediately be skipped have now been observed, including the “Swipe after the ad” prompt.
TikTok has not published details about the mechanism. It remains unclear:
The mechanism is not currently presented in TikTok Ads Manager as a separate, generally available format. Calling it the launch of unskippable TikTok ads would therefore be premature.
An unskippable placement gives a platform something that is difficult to secure in a short-video feed: a guaranteed minimum exposure time. In theory, that could increase viewability, ad recall and completion rates.
Guaranteed viewing, however, is not the same as guaranteed attention.
A user may technically see the ad while experiencing it as an interruption. In that scenario, reported viewing metrics improve, but brand sentiment, the quality of the interaction and the overall platform experience may deteriorate.
For CMOs, the distinction matters: more time in front of an ad does not automatically create more marketing value. If the placement becomes available, VTR, CPV and watch time will not be sufficient measures on their own. Advertisers will also need to assess brand lift, search demand, conversions and incremental business impact.
If TikTok expands the test, the opening seconds of an ad will become even more important. A guaranteed viewing window should not become an excuse for a slow introduction.
The creative should identify the brand, product or customer problem immediately. Users need a reason to keep watching once the mandatory interval ends.
Campaigns using such a placement would need particular attention to:
There is no reason to rebuild media plans before TikTok confirms the product. Brands that invest heavily in the platform should nevertheless monitor placement reports and ask their TikTok representatives whether they are included in any related tests.
TikTok would not be the first social platform to experiment with mandatory ad viewing.
In June 2024, Instagram confirmed a test of Ad Breaks. Some users saw an ad with a countdown and could not continue scrolling until the timer ended. Meta described it as a limited test rather than the launch of a finished advertising product. TechCrunch reported on the experiment.
Tests of this kind show how social platforms are trying to balance advertising revenue against user experience. It is a narrow margin: forced exposure may give advertisers more time, but it can also increase frustration.
This is not yet a new tool to add to a media plan. It is an early signal of how TikTok may be thinking about the next stage of ad monetization.
If the mechanism becomes a formal format, advertisers should not ask only whether watch time increased. The more important question will be: did the extra time create a positive brand interaction and improve business outcomes?
An official TikTok announcement, an Ads Manager buying option or a larger user rollout will show whether this remains a short experiment or develops into a meaningful change in the platform’s advertising model.
