Microsoft Advertising will require advertisers to provide explicit user consent signals starting May 5 to comply with global privacy regulations.

What is Changing?

Starting from May 5, Microsoft will enforce Consent Mode, ensuring advertisers properly manage user data and privacy preferences. This step aligns with increasing privacy regulations worldwide while maintaining advertisers’ ability to track performance effectively.

Why It Matters

With rising data privacy concerns, businesses must balance compliance with efficient ad performance. Microsoft’s Consent Mode allows advertisers to continue collecting insights without violating user privacy, reinforcing trust and transparency in digital advertising.

What is Consent Mode?

Consent Mode is a Microsoft Advertising feature that adjusts cookie access based on user consent. This helps advertisers track conversions while respecting privacy settings. The feature applies to:

  • Universal Event Tracking (UET) on the Microsoft Advertising platform.
  • Universal Pixel, Segment, and Conversion pixels within Microsoft Invest, Curate, or Monetize.

Consent signals can be transmitted through the IAB’s Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) or directly via a Consent Management Platform (CMP).

How to Implement Consent Mode

Businesses can send user consent signals using one of these three methods:

  1. Direct Integration – Implement Consent Mode with UET, Universal Pixel, Segment, or Conversion pixels.
  2. IAB Framework – Pass consent signals through a TCF 2.0 string or a CMP.
  3. Third-Party Tools – Use platforms like Google Tag Manager to integrate Microsoft’s Consent Mode.

Take Action Now

With the enforcement of Consent Mode, advertisers using Microsoft Ads must ensure their systems are configured to comply. Implementing Consent Mode properly will help maintain ad performance while avoiding compliance risks.
