The Google-ification of TikTok: How to Use Keyword Packs and Impression Share

TikTok continues its evolution from a short-form entertainment video platform into a full-fledged search engine. For marketers, this means new opportunities, but also a need for deeper analytics. In its Q4 2026 Product Preview, TikTok announced two major updates for Search Ads: new Impression Share metrics and intelligent Keyword Packs.

These tools are designed to give advertisers a clear understanding of how much search market share they are capturing and how to optimize campaigns for maximum ROI.

A New Level of Transparency: What Impression Share Metrics Measure

Until now, advertisers lacked data on how many potential impressions they were losing. Now, TikTok Ads Manager is introducing two key metrics that operate on auction principles and show the percentage of successfully won auctions on the Search Results Page:

  • Impression Share: The percentage of eligible search results impressions your ads actually captured relative to the total number of relevant search queries they could have participated in.
  • Top 1 Impression Share: The percentage of eligible first-position search results impressions your ads captured relative to all available opportunities for that premium placement.

These data points will be available at multiple levels: campaign, advertiser, and specific keyword. Specifically, they will be supported for standard Search Ads and TopSearch campaigns (a CPM-billed search ad option that guarantees the first sponsored position upon winning the auction).

What to Do If Your Impression Share Is Too Low

If your campaigns are not capturing enough market share, TikTok offers a diagnostic algorithm. The main dividing line here is campaign spending.

  • Budget Exhausted: If the campaign is spending all of its allocated funds but the impression share remains low, the system logically recommends scaling—increasing the budget to capture the remainder of relevant eligible impressions.
  • Budget Not Exhausted: If money is left over, the problem lies in your settings. The platform advises checking whether your bids are competitive enough for those same keywords.

Beyond financial settings, a low impression share can indicate weak keyword coverage, low creative relevance, or a mismatch between the landing page and the user’s search query. Although TikTok does not currently provide separate metrics to clearly distinguish between impressions lost to budget versus rank, a comprehensive analysis of these factors will help pinpoint the weak spot.

Keyword Packs: Automating Keyword Selection

The second massive update is the introduction of Keyword Packs to the Keyword Suggestion Tool. These are ready-made, curated groups of search queries categorized by brand and category.

Instead of building semantics manually, marketers can now preview and add entire packs generated by TikTok’s machine learning models. The biggest advantage of this feature is its dynamic nature. The packs are refreshed daily, utilizing metrics such as search volume, cost-per-click (CPC), and competition levels.

While the history of keyword suggestions in TikTok began in September 2024 with basic impression predictions and match types (with a separate Keyword Planner running in parallel for media planners), the arrival of ready-made “packs” significantly accelerates campaign launches and reduces the risk of missing relevant traffic.

Why This Matters for Your Strategy and What to Do Next

These updates signal that TikTok is maturing into a robust advertising ecosystem that requires brands to adopt a classic performance-marketing approach, much like Google Ads.

Your Next Steps:

  • Dive into the keyword level: As soon as the metrics become available in your account, analyze your keywords. Identify the specific terms that are capturing only a small percentage of their eligible impressions.
  • Audit budgets and bids: Use the troubleshooting algorithm described above to understand whether your potential is being blocked by a budget limit or insufficiently aggressive bidding.
  • Test Keyword Packs carefully: Always use the preview function before adding new packs to your campaigns. This is especially critical for “brand” packs—ensure the algorithm has included the right terms that accurately align with your brand positioning.

Because the rollout of these new features depends on your market and account type, marketers should regularly check Ads Manager for new impression share reporting and updated keyword suggestion tools. TikTok Search Ads is becoming a full-fledged battlefield for attention, and those who master the new analytics fastest will win.
